Celebrate Take a Child Outside Week Sept. 24-30
Take a Child Outside Logo

Folks at our N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, had a simple idea in 2007. Why not dedicate a whole week towards engaging children in nature?   A spark for the idea came from Richard Louv’s book, Last Child in the Woods, Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. The Museum received help from partner organizations, including NC State Parks ,to launch the first annual “Take A Child Outside Week”Sept. 24 - 30, 2007.

The website www.takeachildoutside.org helps parents, teachers and other caregivers find places, activities and ideas for outdoor discovery. In one year’s time, this effort to reconnect children with the joys and benefits of nature blossomed into a celebration that reaches from Hawaii to Florida and from Canada to Belize!

This year, each state park will offer at least two programs during the week that specifically aim to get engage children in natural discovery.  We also have Get Outside! resource kits to help parents and teachers with games and activities that foster nature appreciation.  These can be "checked out" at each of our parks.  The resource boxes have field guides, magnifying glasses, and descriptions of easy outdoor activities for children. We hope the Get Outside! kits will be well used by families visiting the parks.

Also attached is a list of some of the programs being offered for Take A Child Outside Week by many of our parks. Contact your local park for more information.

Children can reconnect with nature and parents can reconnect with their children in North Carolina’s state parks during Take a Child Outside Week Sept. 24-30.

The State Parks of North Carolina  will join environmental education agencies across the state presenting special nature programs during the week. And, state parks will make available exciting  Get Outside! kits to families and small groups that prompt do-it-yourself activities to rediscover nature’s wonders.

Research has shown that engaging children in nature promotes learning, creativity and healthy lifestyles. Children who learn to play in natural settings are often more physically fit, score higher on test of concentration and often can simply enjoy life more fully.

Take a Child Outside Week originated  in 2007 with environmental educators at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences  and was sparked by the book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv. The book suggests that opportunities for children to explore forests, fields and wetlands are disappearing in favor of afternoons spent playing video games.

“State parks have always been safe but exciting places for people to rediscover nature, offering miles of trails, free interpretive programs by rangers and nature museums as well as opportunities just to explore independently,” said Lewis Ledford, director of state parks.

North Carolina’s state parks system is also involved in the national Children in Nature initiative developed especially for state parks and promoted by the National Association of State Park Directors.

The Web site www.takeachildoutside.com helps parents, teachers and other caregivers find places, activities and ideas for outdoor discovery. For more information about North Carolina state parks and their environmental education programs and events, go to www.ncparks.gov.
