A local supporter of Stone Mountain, Ted Smith noticed that
the cart used by volunteer campground hosts was in poor condition. Concerned
about their safety and comfort he took it on himself to find a way to obtain a
new utility cart. His persistence and enthusiasm led him to raise the money
from several sources including FSP and FSP
501c’s non profit status was also instrumental in directing the funds towards
the cart’s purchase
The State Park uses volunteers to run and oversee their
campground. The Campground Hosts stay in their own camper at the campground for
a month at a time. The Host responsibilities are to register campers as they
arrive at the campground, routinely check camping sites and keep an updated
list of new arrivals and departed campers, provide information about the park
and surrounding area and generally assist campers and visitors within the
confines of the campground. Without theses volunteers providing their time
to the State Park, the campground would not be able to operate and provide the
place that so many people enjoy. Ted had met many of the different Campground
Hosts that worked at the park and knew they needed this cart. The average Hosts
are retired couples between the ages of 55 and 75 and all too often their time and
efforts go unnoticed to the average person. Ted took on this project to raise
money for a new cart because these volunteers give their time selfishly so others
can enjoy Stone Mountain State Park Campground.
Thanks to Ted and all of the people and organization that
contributed to his project.
