FSP Sponsored Project
FSP is proud to support the annual Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area Poetry Contest. This is a great example of the projects that our rangers do every day to work with children and the local communities. They work to connect school lessons about arts and science to our natural environment. They children get to explore the park and apply their education to nature.  The winners receive prizes funded by FSP including sleeping bags for their next trip outdoors.

The poems are about Mt. Jefferson State Natural Area.  Thanks to Park Ranger Tom Randolph, the management and staff at Mt Jefferson Natural Area, and the teachers and parents in Ashe County for their great work with the children.

And a special thanks to all the children who entered their poems - They are all Winners!

Mt Jefferson Natural Area Poetry Contest

2009/2010 -
For the forth year your donations to FSP funded the prizes for our budding nature poets.
From Tom Randolph Lead Interpretive and Education Ranger at Mt Jefferson:
Our 2009/2010 Poetry contest has been a great success.

We received over 300 poems from Ashe County's K-6th graders. Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer has once again supported the contest as the finalist judge, Kathryn has also written comments about several of the poems for the young poets to read.

Our local school superintendent, school principals, teachers and parents have all been very supportive in this years contest. Last week we distributed the prizes that were funded by NC Friends of State Parks. Each school principal and several teachers attended the presentations. At one of the schools I presented the prizes in front of over 600 students and faculty.

My favorite story that I was told about this year's contest came from Ranger Scott Robinson who was the evening duty ranger several weeks ago. He was closing the park at the end of the day and met up with a family who told him that they had brought their daughter to the Mt. Jefferson's overlook so that she could be inspired and write a beautiful poem for our contest.
Who could ask for a better Muse than that.

Learn more on Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer's blog including photos of the winners and copies of the winning poems. Congratulations to them all!

Your membership and the 501c Non Profit status of Friends of State Parks funded the prizes for the contest.
